Eagle F1 (Asymmetric 5) Tyres description & features

The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 uses an asymmetric tread design to maximise both responsiveness and braking. The tread is split into distinct block layouts. Goodyear has a special name for their braking tech; they call it ActiveBraking Technology. This design creates an edge of braking tread to maximise the surface area of rubber in contact with the road during braking. Coupled with this tech is Power Cushion Technology, which adds stiffness and improves the connection for steering response.

The Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 is the new and improved version of the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3. The Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 SUV also has the same asymmetric tread layout, but uses a different casing designed to hold the greater weights of SUVs and crossovers. The wet and dry handling capabilities of these tyres are excellent. The longevity of these tyres before needing replacement is also quite good. The sizes I chose are low profile and fairly wide, which does result in some road noise, but it is not too high. In terms of price, these tyres are fair for N0 rated tyres for my Porsche.

These tyres fit my needs reasonably well, based on a combination of ratings, price, and quality given the distances and types of roads I travel. Road tyre prices are increasing, but since they are the only point of touch with the road, it depends on the driver, types of road, and how long they last. They are quite expensive as they are upper midrange tyres. They offer fairly good grip in wet and dry conditions and are not very noisy. They are fairly good for midrange tyres, but the price is starting to become a disadvantage.

Since Goodyear has stopped making the 275 35 20 in standard version, I had to get the 265 40 20 instead. I feel like the increased profile makes them feel bulkier, especially since they rub when turning fully. I feel like they're less stable when cornering than the 35 profile tyres. With the distance I drive I will have to put up with them for about three years. If I could send them back I would.

For the past few weeks, I have been trying out my new tyres in all different weather conditions from dry spells to rain to heavy showers. They have been brilliant. On wet surfaces, I can feel a stronger grip compared to my last tyres which would skid sometimes. They are much quieter, my steering is more responsive, and my ride feels smoother. I feel much more confident driving knowing I have good tyres that can handle all weather conditions. Overall I am very happy and recommend them to everyone.

The car does feel a little different with the new tyres, but I'm not sure how. They seem to steer a bit more quickly, but it's not as stable. And if I'm being honest, I'm not a huge fan of the look of the tyres. My old Continental tyres had a flatter side profile which I preferred.

There is a bit more road noise than the original Bridgestone Turanza tyres which are quietest tyres I have owned and which lasted an incredible 38,000 miles on the front before the wear marks were hit. I have done long distance drives in both fairly severe rain and dry weather with these so I can't say how they do in winter. Having done only 3,000 miles so far, I think it is too soon to judge how long they may last or how they perform as the wear down.

Whatever the weather conditions, these tyres work flawlessly. On my Audi S8, the braking feels extremely sharp, almost like it's grabbing. They are also quiet tyres, and if I drive gently, I can get 27 to 33 miles per gallon with my 520PS car which is better than my LR Discovery 4 SDV6. The tread depth has also reasonably worn after 18 months to about 4-5mm. Overall, I am very happy.

I have had these on the car for about six months now and they have been excellent. Grip in the dry is very strong and they feel just as planted in heavy rain, which is what sold me on them in the first place. They are noticeably quieter than the tyres I took off, especially on coarse motorway surfaces, and the ride is comfortable enough over broken roads without feeling soft. Most of my driving is long motorway runs and the wear so far looks very even, so I would expect to get a decent mileage out of them. They are a summer tyre so I swap to winters once the cold weather sets in, but for the rest of the year they suit the car well. Not the cheapest option, but I would buy them again without thinking about it.

I do think it may be a little premature to make a definitive statement on the wear, but I did notice a stark difference after changing out the old tyres.
