Pilot Sport 5 Tyres description & features

The max-performance Pilot Sport 5 is a summer tyre with a focus on the best steering response on warm wet and dry pavements. With Michelin’s Dynamic Response Technology the belt at the tyre tread is constructed with a hybrid of aramid and nylon. The blocks on the tyre’s outer edge are firm for cornering. Blocks are slit and spaced for additional grip to wet pavements. Water is evacuated by the rearward and forward spaced inner side grooves.

Compared to its predecessor the Pilot Sport 4, it features sidewalls with a velvet effect for a dark textured finish thanks to the Premium Touch Design. Michelin’s tread wear indicator, Wear2Check, is a built-in feature of the sidewall. Type XL of the reinforced construction is an option for select specifications. The Michelin Pilot Sport 5 is available for purchase from Tyres.co.uk.

Highlights

  • Summer tyre for wet and dry
  • Firm outer blocks for cornering
  • Wet-grip blocks and water grooves

The perform great, and compared to the original tyres, they are a bit quieter. The driving experience is improved which is always a plus with the 128ti. I have used these tyres before, so I know them.

On dry roads, the grip feels almost endless, while on wet roads, it is comforting. The wear rate corresponds to what you would expect from a high-performance tyre.

Compared to the Pilot Sport 2s that came with the car, the Pilot Sport 5s are a better match for my Peugeot 308 GTi. They have noticeably improved ride comfort and wet grip, along with better traction which means I no longer spin my wheels. Without a doubt, I will be putting Pilot Sport 5s on the back when those tyres need changing.

Tyre review for Michelin Pilot Sport 5 235/40R18
I had some issues with the air valve on the front driver's side tyre. I also had some issues with getting a proper seal with the airline while inflating. I have never experienced something like this with the Pilot Sport 4's. This time I decided to go for the cheaper 5's. Possibly small quality issues may be the reason the 5's are cheaper.

It was obvious to me that I was better able to grip the road on the winding sections. I also noticed the tyre was much more robust, and the car's body lean and shift less when turning, especially when I was more aggressive in the corners.

Like the last set, these tyres handle wet conditions very well at the start but this is still the case as the tyre ages. They do however, perform well consistently in dry conditions and in my opinion, the best all-rounder.

Tyre review for Michelin Pilot Sport 5 285/40R19
I used to employed them during sleet or rain, but now I can use them any time besides the summer! The tyres really helped with my skidding issues. I can now push my car, a 330D M Sport, to its limits, and I can wet brake without worrying about it. I didn't expect them to wear down so slowly, considering I have driven about 6000 miles with them, and I haven't even lost 2 mm. After 8 months of aggressive driving, they started to show edge wear. I have burned through a set of track tyres in 30 minutes, so the wear on the tyres is quite impressive to me. They may not be the best of the best, but they really do give a decent performance and durability. The feedback and confidence with braking and accelerating is great with no unexpected skidding! There is a clear difference when I compare them to the previous cheaper tyres that came with my car. It's a bit more noise when driving, but in my opinion, it is worth the trade off.

Tyre review for Michelin Pilot Sport 5 215/40R17
The original tyres on my Hyundai i20N, the Pirelli P Zero N, had great grip but only lasted about 5700 miles and wore out quickly from a mix of short trips and no trips to the track. They also made a horrible noise from the LSD rubbing on tight turns. After hearing people on the N Owners Forums, I decided to switch to Michelin PS5s and go up to 225 size tyres because they were cheaper than the 215s. I only have about 1,000 miles on them so it's still very difficult to judge wear over time so I can't give them a perfect score yet. I am grateful that there is really good grip in all conditions and there is no longer a rubbing noise on full lock, but I guess it is unfortunate that the rim protection is less visible and less effective on the Michelins than the Pirellis. I also want to thank Chris the garage in Limavady, Northern Ireland for fitting the tyres at the exact time they said they would and for their care in dealing with the unmarked rims on my car. Cheers to the guys!

Tyre review for Michelin Pilot Sport 5 235/45R17
I fitted Michelin PS5s all round on my car but they wore out ridiculously quickly, and despite all the hype, I personally think they are less durable than some mid-range or even budget ones I have used before. It just goes to show that paying more doesn't mean you are getting better quality, in this case, I would say it's more to do with brand name than anything else.

Until the fitting, everything was good. The garage damaged one of my wheels and broke a pressure sensor. All the wheels have been refurbished, but the sensor issue is still there. Changing my supersports to the new tyres was a good decision. They are cheaper and grip better when it's wet. The response to the steering is a lot better which makes the car handle better. The fuel economy has basically stayed the same. I have noticed that when I am off the motorway, I can hear the tyres more. I recommend these tyres instead of the stock ones that BMW puts on the cars, especially considering the climate that we drive in. These are my new tyres on all four wheels.

Good performance, but not quite matching the original PS4S (Star) tyres made for the car, which had 4 rubber compounds compared to these 2, However, the PS5 tyres last longer, and were a little cheaper, so I am happy.

The tyres on our Abarth 595 Competizione are performing exceptionally. They are much quieter than the Michelins that came with the car. I currently have Michelin PS5s fitted over the sporty Hankook iON evo R tyres, which provided my Mini JCW E with no grip at all. During acceleration, the car would struggle to gain traction under even the most moderate of circumstances, and at 6,500 miles, the Hankook tyres were almost completely worn. With the new Michelins, the situation has improved dramatically - my car now adheres to the road surface much better, and I've also experienced a marked decrease in torque steer. I'm still waiting to see what the longevity and wear of the PS5s will be. This summer, my aim is to use up the remaining tread on the Hankooks before swapping my front tyres to Michelins. So, until I can put the Michelins on the front, I'll be dealing with a lot of obnoxious torque steer.

Tyre review for Michelin Pilot Sport 5 205/45R16
Having fitted Michelin PS5 tyres to my lightweight sporty hatchback, I can say they have been nothing short of impressive. When it comes to grippy, comfortable performance tyres, these are the best. They also easily manage wet and poor quality B roads. Steering feedback is excellent, and you can feel the road well through the wheel. The only issue is that steering accuracy, and good initial turn-in isn't top tier. However, the big positive is that during the middle of the corner they can handle the load being put on them. Speaking of grip, they are also great when it comes to smoothing out nasty bumps in the road. They will also perform best after an initial break-in period of around 400-500 miles. I say this because at first it felt like I was driving on jelly. Tyre pressures will affect the ride quality a lot, so this is definitely something you will want to play around with. In my opinion, it is also worth getting the XL version, even for lighter cars, as the stiffer sidewalls help with steering a lot.

Compared to the standard Bridgestone Touranzas, these tyres are a little quieter, as well as providing a better ride and better traction in all weather conditions. The downside is they are slightly more fuel inefficient and some people might be bothered by the absence of a rim protector. I haven't used them long enough to comment on durability.

I had no issues with these tyres in any weather condition. They are also quieter and more comfortable than my old Michelin PS4S tyres, especially at bumps. They feel softer, which is a bonus for everyday driving. I have driven these to wet and cold British weather and I have had great grip and confidence in corners and while braking. Summer is here in the UK, so I had the chance to drive them in dry and warm weather and again I had great grip and control. I'm interested to see how these tyres perform in the UK coastline. I have a trip planned there and it should really put these tyres to the test.

Having finally replaced my old Conti Sport Contact 7 tyres which lasted seemingly forever, I chose the PS5s. I remembered them being good on my old car. With 350bhp you need good tyres for grip. I am seeing that on my Mercedes W204 with bigger wheels, the edge tyres wear because of the factory geometry setup. Other big brand tyres usually last around a year to a year and a half, but these tyres have lasted me three years. These tyres are about 10-20% more expensive than other premium brands, but they also last two to three times longer than them, so they are worth the money. They provide good grip and traction in both dry and wet conditions. Ever since I have fitted these tyres, I have had less punctures. This could be a coincidence of course, but I have never had one after over three years of usage, so it could be true.
