Reading tyre sizes

A tyre marked fully is something like 205/55 R16 91V. Each part gives you information you need to work out how the tyre will fit your vehicle.

205Width 55Profile RRadial 16Rim 91Load VSpeed

Tyre sizes are designed to be vehicle-specific. Your manufacturer will give you the correct one on a placard, which all vehicles have in the driver’s door shut. If you need to check an alternative size, you can use the tyre size comparison tool or decode the full size.

What you need to know about tyres

Here are some of the terms listed on a sidewall, with plain English descriptions.

205
Width
The measurement across the tread of the rubber from sidewall to sidewall. The bigger the number, the wider the rubber.
55
Aspect ratio
How high the sidewall is compared to the width of the rubber. In this case 55, the sidewall is 55% of the width of the rubber, so a smaller number shows a shorter, stiffer sidewall.
R
Construction
Almost all modern cars use radial construction and will show R. An older or specialist construction, if it is marked, will show D (diagonal/bias).
16
Rim
The diameter of the wheel the rubber will cover, measured in inches. It is absolutely critical that this measurement matches your wheel.
91
Load index
Tyres rated 91 have a maximum load of 615 kg per tyre. Never fit a tyre with a lower load index than the manufacturer specifies.
V
Speed rating
A V rating is 149 mph, a W rating is 168 mph and an H rating is 130 mph.
XL
Reinforced
An Extra Load marking means the casing is reinforced to carry a higher load than the standard tyre of the same size, often used on SUVs and electric cars.
C
C marking
Commercial – the tyre is designed for light commercial vehicle use, with a reinforced casing to carry a heavy load.
