205/55 R17 is a family-car tyre fitted to BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and Citroen C4 Picasso versions. The numbers are simple. 205 is the tyre width in millimetres. 55 is the sidewall height relative to tyre width, in this case 55% of 205mm which is about 113mm. R17 means a radial tyre on a 17-inch rim, for an overall diameter of 657mm. That height helps cushion uneven road surfaces. XL versions of this tyre are available on Tyres.co.uk.
