The Continental EcoContact 5 is a summer touring tyre that intends to limit rolling resistance. This tyre introduces a new tread compound and form that minimises energy loss to heat. The sidewall flexes leading to energy loss too, and to mitigate this, Continental designed the sidewall in conjunction with the new tread compound to limit flexing during turning.
Rolling resistance improves over generations. The EcoContact 5 is now on the third iteration over its predecessor, the ContiEcoContact 3. According to Continental, the EcoContact 5, in its launch form, achieved a 20% decrease in rolling resistance and an increase in tyre life by 12% over the ContiEcoContact 3. Some iterations of the EcoContact 5 also feature ContiSeal, a sealing layer that closes punctures up to 5mm. At this moment, Tyres.co.uk has the Continental EcoContact 5, with and without ContiSeal, in stock.
