The Continental EcoContact 5 is a summer touring tyre that intends to limit rolling resistance. This tyre introduces a new tread compound and form that minimises energy loss to heat. The sidewall flexes leading to energy loss too, and to mitigate this, Continental designed the sidewall in conjunction with the new tread compound to limit flexing during turning.

Rolling resistance improves over generations. The EcoContact 5 is now on the third iteration over its predecessor, the ContiEcoContact 3. According to Continental, the EcoContact 5, in its launch form, achieved a 20% decrease in rolling resistance and an increase in tyre life by 12% over the ContiEcoContact 3. Some iterations of the EcoContact 5 also feature ContiSeal, a sealing layer that closes punctures up to 5mm. Purchased a second-hand vehicle with inconsistent Falken tyres. Changed the two front ones for Continentals because I have had good experiences with them in the past. Observed better straight-line stability and also performance in the wet.

Astra 2.0 CDTi. These tyres do tend to favour comfort over sportiness, although they still offer reasonable feedback when cornering enthusiastically. They may edge wear due to overzealous roundabout driving but they do tend to hold their line reasonably well. One of mine developed a rumble from tread edge feathering, but I would still choose these tyres again as they tend to perform well overall.
