Conti Sport Contact 5 Tyres description & features

The Continental ContiSportContact 5 is a summer tyre which Conti describe as ultra-high-performance. It focuses on enhancing both dry and wet braking distances and utilises Conti’s Black Chili compound which is a braking and cornering aid. The asymmetric tread has large outer blocks to strengthen cornering. The tread innovation is a front-to-back groove system which has a mini block inner edge to aid wet braking and road clearance through the tread.

There are ContiSeal versions which contain a viscous layer which seals punctures from objects up to 5 mm. SSR versions have a sidewall reinforcement which protects the tyre and allows flexibility to travel for a short distance (under 80 km) and at a slowed speed. The ContiSportContact 5 was the precursor to the SportContact 6 and is also a summer tyre. Continental’s other max-performance summer tyre. Unfortunately, the car hasn't been drivable much since before Christmas because of an electrical problem, which meant I have avoided the worst of the weather. The car used to have issues with tramlining but that has largely been resolved with new tyres.

Tyres provide excellent grip, regardless of whether the road is dry or wet, as the steering is always steady, and feels secure. Generally, they are quiet on the road, because on concrete motorways at high speeds it does tend to get quite noisy, but I'd definitely buy them again.

The expectations have been met for the tyres. I have chosen to stay with the car manufacturers original choice. They have been a joy in the wet, gripping the road well. The only downside I have seen is less grip when it is snowy. I cannot provide any photos because I changed cars in October but stayed with the same model, which now has a different brand. I think I will stick with Continentals when it is time for new ones.

The Conti Sports that came with my car from the factory are truly excellent. They look great, provide great grip and steering feel, while also maintaining a light and responsive feel. They let you cruise over puddles even at high speeds (while reducing the risk of aquaplaning) and to do this, they provide excellent steering feel even in the worst (wet) conditions. Overall, they are the best tyres!

Switching to Continental tyres provided an immediate improvement, particularly when I compare them to the cheaper Chinese tyres I had prior. My old tyres had 6 mm of tread left, but still could not keep the CLS stable. With the new all round Continentals, the difference is clear, especially in the rain.
