Let's break down the numbers. 165 represents the tyre width in millimetres. 70 represents the sidewall as the sidewall is 70% of 165mm (165mm x 70% = 115.5mm). R14 indicates that the tyre is radial and is fitted to a 14-inch rim. The overall diameter would be 587mm. The sidewall does help to absorb bumps on the road for these small cars.
