How well the tyre stops in the wet. Graded A to E, where A is the shortest stopping distance. Each grade is worth roughly 3 metres, about a car length.
How loud the tyre is from outside the car, measured in decibels. Graded A to C, where A is the quietest.
Designed for cars, rather than vans, 4x4s or commercial vehicles.
155/70 R12 is typical for older small cars, given how the greater height of the sidewall, cushioning on bumpy roads, is a plus for this type of vehicle. The first of the numbers are the simplest: 155 is the width of the tyre in mm. 70 is the sidewall height expressed as a percentage (70%) of the width. So here, 70% of 155mm works out to be 108mm. R12 means a radial tyre, for 12-inch rim, which gives a diameter of 522mm. We have 155/70 R12 at Tyres.co.uk.
