Tyre review for Michelin Pilot Sport 5 215/40R17 87Y XL
The original tyres on my Hyundai i20N, the Pirelli P Zero N, had great grip but only lasted about 5700 miles and wore out quickly from a mix of short trips and no trips to the track. They also made a horrible noise from the LSD rubbing on tight turns. After hearing people on the N Owners Forums, I decided to switch to Michelin PS5s and go up to 225 size tyres because they were cheaper than the 215s. I only have about 1,000 miles on them so it's still very difficult to judge wear over time so I can't give them a perfect score yet. I am grateful that there is really good grip in all conditions and there is no longer a rubbing noise on full lock, but I guess it is unfortunate that the rim protection is less visible and less effective on the Michelins than the Pirellis. I also want to thank Chris the garage in Limavady, Northern Ireland for fitting the tyres at the exact time they said they would and for their care in dealing with the unmarked rims on my car. Cheers to the guys!
