When to change motorcycle tyres

Motorcycles necessitate more frequent inspection since they rely on grip.

Replace when:

• Tread depth is at 1mm. This is the legal limit on motorcycles over 50cc in the UK
• Cracking, damage, or noticeable flat spots on the tread or sidewall
• More than 5 years old even with adequate tread
• The bike is unstable, most noticeably in the rain or when turning
• If the tyres have uneven wear it could mean alignment or suspension issues

Inspection tips

Inspect your motorcycle tyres for extreme damage prior to every ride. Three times a month is the absolute minimum when checking them in detail. When riding in a straight line for an extended period be sure to check the edges of the tread because the centre will wear down quicker than the edges.
