Tyres

How do I check tyre pressure at home or at a petrol station?

How to check and set tyre pressure

While at a fuel station

  • Find the recommended tyre pressure located on the driver's door sticker or in the vehicle handbook
  • Remove the dust cap off the valve of the tyre
  • Use the controls to set the air machine to the recommended PSI
  • Firmly attach the air hose to the valve of the tyre
  • The machine will inflate or deflate the tyre automatically to the pressure set
  • Remove the hose and do not forget to replace the dust cap
  • Repeat the steps on all four tyres, and the spare tyre if you have one

While at home

To check the reading, use a digital tyre pressure gauge. To do this, remove the valve cap, press the gauge on the valve stem strongly, and read the pressure. Should you need to pump air, use a portable 12V compressor that requires plugging to a lighter socket in the car, or a rechargeable pump.

Important notes

  • For a precise reading, the tyres should be cold
  • All four tyres should be checked including the spare
  • The front and back tyres may have different pressure recommendations
