Can tyres be recycled?

Tyre recycling in the UK

As a matter of fact, old tyres can and are recycled through several methods.

What happens to tyres?

• Rubber crumb - Tyres are broken down and granulated into small particles that are used for construction of sports surfaces, playgrounds, artificial pitches, and safety flooring
• Energy recovery - Due to the high energy content of rubber, it can be used as fuel in cement kilns and in power generation
• Retreading - Tyres used on commercial vehicles can be re-treaded to give them a new lease of life
• New products - The processed rubber is used in a variety of products, including flooring, mats, and construction materials

Legal requirements

The UK has prohibited the disposal of whole tyres in landfills since 2003. Additionally, landfilling of shredded tyres has been illegal since 2006. Therefore, all tyres collected for disposal must be recycled. When you book fitting through Tyres.co.uk, responsible disposal and recycling is included in the price.
