Higher load index - okay

Fitting a tyre with a higher load index than the manufacturer asks for is fine. It is common on SUVs and on vehicles that carry heavy loads most of the time. The higher index copes with the weight better and can last slightly longer.

Lower load index - nope

It’s a no-no to put a lower load index tyre than the OEM fitment indicated. A lower load index can result in:

• The tyre failing, especially at higher loads, or blow outs at high speeds
• An MOT failure
• Voided cover from your insurance underwriter
