Can motorcycle tyres be plugged?
Motorcycle tyre plugging
Plugs are acceptable in emergencies
An external plug can be considered an emergency measure that is not safe enough to be used as a permanent repair, as it is not a good idea to make an emergency repair to a tyre that is relied upon for the stability and safety of the cycle.
Sufficient repairs
It is necessary to perform internal patch repairs with the tyre removed from the rim, and the tyre must be inspected from the inside to perform the safer of the available repairs. The fitter is able to evaluate any damage that may be inside the tyre, and provide a plug and patch combination that is compliant with repair standards.
Replacement is the only option when
- The puncture is in or close to the sidewall
- The tyre has been ridden on while flat
- There is visible structural damage
- The tyre has previously been repaired
