Only cars that have a working Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) can have run flat tyres fitted.
Why is a TPMS needed?
In the case of a puncture, run flat tyres can feel and drive as if there is nothing wrong. Since run flats are designed to feel normal, you will not know there is an issue without the TPMS light on your dashboard. This could cause you to drive on the tyre beyond the safe distance, which can risk damaging the wheel and can put you in an unsafe situation.
Does my car have a TPMS?
Since November 2014, TPMS systems have been mandatory in all new vehicles sold in the EU and UK. Therefore, if your car was made after then, it has a TPMS. Many older cars have TPMS systems fitted too.
Other considerations:
- Check that your car can use the size run flat tyres that you want
- Cars not made for run flat tyres may not be made to accommodate the stiff ride
