When to replace your tyres

There isn't a set distance you can travel before changing your tyres. This is because it varies depending on the age, tread depth and general condition of your tyres.

Replace your tyres when:

• Tread depth goes to 1.6mm (legal minimum) or 3mm (recommended)
• You see cracks, bulges or any damage to the tread or sidewall
• Tyres are 5 to 6 years old (NOTE: age takes precedence over remaining tread)
• There is vibration, pulling to one side, or uneven wear
• There is impact damage from a pothole or kerb

How to check

You can check tread depth with a gauge or a 20p coin. When you check air pressure you should also check for cracks and bulges on the sidewalls, and the DOT code to see the age of the tyres. If you're unsure, then consult a professional.
