Tyres

What are tubeless tyres?

Fundamentals of tubeless tyres

A tubeless tyre doesn't use a separate inner tube. Instead, it uses a seal to anchor against the wheel rim. Air is contained in the tyre against the wheel rim.

Are my car tyres tubeless?

Almost certainly yes. For decades now, the standard for modern car tyres has been tubeless.

Benefits

  • Safer in the event of a puncture - if a tubeless tyre picks up a nail or screw, air is lost slowly and it does not deflate instantly, allowing a driver more time to react safely
  • Reduced weight - The absence of an inner tube translates to less weight, better fuel efficiency, and improved handling
  • Reduced heat build up - In the absence of a tube, there is reduced friction at speed hence less heat generated
