225/50 R17 is standard on older models of BMW's 3 and 5 series. 225 is the width of the tyre in mm. The second number is the sidewall height as a percentage of the first number. So, 50% of 225mm is 112.5mm. The R stands for Radial, and 17 is the diameter of the rim in inches. That 112mm sidewall allows bigger cars to handle rougher roads better.
