When should I change to winter tyres in the UK?
When to fit and remove winter tyres
Timing your winter tyre changeover correctly ensures you get the full safety benefit without unnecessary wear on the softer compound.
When to fit winter tyres
The general rule is to fit winter tyres when average temperatures consistently drop below 7°C. In most parts of the UK, this is typically from late October through to late March. Below 7°C, the rubber in summer tyres starts to harden and lose grip, which is exactly where winter tyres excel.
When to switch back
Switch back to summer tyres when daytime temperatures are consistently above 7°C, typically from late March or April onwards. Running winter tyres in warm weather accelerates tread wear and increases braking distances on hot, dry roads.
Using all-season tyres instead
If you have fitted all-season tyres, you do not need to swap at all. They are designed to perform across the full UK temperature range year-round, making them a popular hassle-free alternative to seasonal changeovers.
