When should I change motorcycle tyres?
When to replace motorcycle tyres
Regular inspection is particularly important for motorcycles, which rely heavily on tyre grip for rider safety.
Replace when
- Tread depth reaches 1mm — This is the legal minimum for motorcycles over 50cc in the UK
- Cracking, flat spots or damage are visible on the tread or sidewall
- The tyre is more than 5 years old regardless of tread condition
- The bike feels unstable, particularly in wet conditions or during cornering
- Uneven wear patterns appear, which may indicate alignment or suspension issues
Inspection tips
Check your motorcycle tyres before every ride for obvious damage. Do a thorough tread depth and condition check at least monthly. Pay particular attention to the edges of the tread if you ride mostly in a straight line, as the centre may wear faster than the shoulders.
