Tyres

What happens if tyre pressure is too low?

Effects of underinflated tyres

Underinflation is one of the most common and dangerous tyre issues, yet it is also one of the easiest to prevent with regular checks.

What happens

  • Uneven wear — The outer edges of the tread wear faster than the centre, reducing tyre life
  • Increased fuel consumption — More rolling resistance means your engine works harder, using more fuel
  • Excess heat build-up — The tyre flexes more than designed, generating heat that can lead to structural failure in extreme cases
  • Longer braking distances — Even slight underinflation measurably increases the distance needed to stop
  • Sluggish handling — The car feels less responsive to steering inputs

How to prevent it

Check your tyre pressures at least once a month and before any long journey. Top up to the manufacturer's recommended pressure, which is found on the door frame sticker or in your vehicle handbook. Regular checks take just a couple of minutes and prevent all of the problems listed above.
