What do XL and Reinforced mean on a tyre?
XL and Reinforced tyres explained
XL (Extra Load) and Reinforced are two terms for the same thing. Both indicate a tyre with a stronger internal construction, designed to support heavier loads at higher inflation pressures. Different manufacturers use different labelling, but the specification is essentially the same.
How they differ from standard tyres
| Feature | Standard tyre | XL or Reinforced tyre |
| Sidewall construction |
Standard |
Reinforced with additional material |
| Maximum load capacity |
Lower |
Higher for the same size |
| Required inflation pressure |
Standard |
Higher, check your vehicle handbook |
| Ride comfort |
Softer |
Slightly firmer due to stiffer sidewalls |
Important
If your vehicle was fitted with XL or Reinforced tyres from the factory, always replace them with the same type. Fitting standard tyres on a vehicle designed for XL could lead to tyre failure under normal loads. Our registration search handles this automatically and will only show the correct specification for your vehicle.
