What are extra load tyres?

Understanding extra load tyres

Extra load tyres, also known as XL tyres, have a reinforced internal construction that allows them to carry heavier loads at higher inflation pressures than standard tyres of the same size.

Who needs extra load tyres?

XL tyres are designed for vehicles that are heavier or carry more weight than average. Common vehicles that require them include:

  • SUVs and crossovers
  • People carriers and MPVs
  • Electric vehicles, which are heavier due to battery weight
  • Vehicles with performance modifications
  • Cars that regularly carry heavy loads or tow trailers

How to identify extra load tyres

XL tyres are marked with XL or Extra Load on the sidewall. They typically have a higher load index number than the standard version of the same tyre size.

Do I need to replace like for like?

Yes. If your vehicle was originally equipped with XL tyres, you must replace them with the same specification. Fitting standard tyres where XL are required could result in tyre failure under normal driving loads.

How we handle this

When you search by registration on Tyres.co.uk, our system automatically identifies whether your vehicle requires XL tyres and only shows the correct options. You will not accidentally order a standard tyre when you need an extra load version.
