What are the key signs I need new tyres?
Signs you need new tyres
Knowing what to look for helps you catch tyre problems early and stay safe on the road.
Visual signs
- Low tread depth — At or approaching 3mm. Use the 20p test to check.
- Cracks on the sidewall — Small surface cracks can progress and indicate ageing rubber
- Bulges or blisters — Weak spots in the sidewall that indicate internal structural damage
- Uneven wear — Wear concentrated on one edge or the centre suggests alignment or pressure problems
- Embedded objects — Nails, screws or glass in the tread
Driving signs
- Vibration through the steering wheel at speed
- The car pulling to one side under braking or at a constant speed
- Reduced grip in wet conditions that was not noticeable before
- Increased road noise
Age
Tyres older than 5 to 6 years should be inspected carefully and replaced if there are any signs of degradation, regardless of remaining tread depth.
