Should I choose winter tyres?

When to choose winter tyres

Winter tyres are specifically engineered for cold conditions. They use a softer rubber compound and a deeper, more complex tread pattern that dramatically improves grip on cold, wet, icy and snowy roads.

Consider winter tyres if you

  • Regularly drive in temperatures below 7°C, typically from October to March in the UK
  • Live in a rural, hilly, or northern area prone to frost, ice or snow
  • Commute on untreated roads early in the morning
  • Want the safest possible grip during the colder months

How much difference do they make?

In cold, wet conditions, winter tyres can reduce braking distances by up to 10 metres compared to summer tyres at the same speed. On snow and ice, the improvement is even greater. That is a significant safety margin, particularly in an emergency stop.

Legal position in the UK

Winter tyres are not legally required in the UK. However, they are strongly recommended for safety during colder months. Many European countries do mandate them between certain dates, so check local regulations if you plan to drive abroad in winter.

The alternative

If you do not want the hassle of seasonal tyre swaps, all-season tyres offer a year-round compromise that handles UK winters reasonably well for most drivers.
