How do I check tyre pressure at home or at a petrol station?

How to check and adjust tyre pressure

At a petrol station

  1. Find your recommended tyre pressure on the sticker inside the driver's door frame or in your vehicle handbook
  2. Remove the valve dust cap from the tyre
  3. Set the air machine to your recommended PSI using the controls
  4. Attach the air hose firmly to the tyre valve
  5. The machine will automatically inflate or deflate the tyre to the set pressure
  6. Remove the hose and replace the dust cap
  7. Repeat for all four tyres, including the spare if you have one

At home

Use a handheld digital tyre pressure gauge to check the reading. Remove the valve cap, press the gauge firmly onto the valve stem, and read the pressure. If you need to add air, use a portable 12V compressor that plugs into your car's cigarette lighter socket, or a rechargeable inflator.

Important tips

  • Always check when tyres are cold for an accurate reading
  • Check all four tyres plus the spare
  • Your front and rear tyres may have different recommended pressures
