How often should tyres be replaced?
When to replace your tyres
There is no fixed mileage interval for tyre replacement. It depends on tread depth, age and overall condition.
Replace your tyres when
- Tread depth reaches 3mm (recommended) or 1.6mm (legal minimum)
- You notice cracking, bulging or damage on the sidewall or tread
- The tyre is over 5 to 6 years old, regardless of how much tread remains
- You experience vibration, pulling to one side, or uneven wear
- The tyre has suffered impact damage from a pothole or kerb
How to check
Use the 20p test or a tread depth gauge to check tread regularly. Inspect the sidewalls for cracks or bulges each time you check your pressures. Check the DOT date code on the sidewall to confirm the tyre's age. If in doubt, ask a professional fitter to inspect them.
