How long do tyres last?
Expected tyre lifespan
Tyre lifespan varies significantly depending on the tyre quality, your driving habits and how well they are maintained.
Typical mileage ranges
- Premium tyres — 25,000 to 40,000+ miles
- Mid-range tyres — 20,000 to 30,000 miles
- Budget tyres — 15,000 to 25,000 miles
Age limit
Regardless of how much tread remains, most manufacturers recommend replacing tyres after 5 to 6 years from the date of manufacture. The rubber compound degrades over time through exposure to heat, UV light and ozone, even on tyres that have not been driven on extensively. The absolute maximum recommended age is 10 years.
What affects lifespan
Tyre pressure, wheel alignment, driving style and road conditions all play a significant role. Keeping tyres correctly inflated and wheels properly aligned are the two most impactful things you can do to extend their life.
