How long do motorcycle tyres last?
Motorcycle tyre lifespan
Expected mileage
Motorcycle tyre lifespan varies significantly depending on the tyre compound and your riding style:
- Sport/track compound tyres — 3,000 to 7,000 miles. Softer rubber for maximum grip but shorter life.
- Sport touring tyres — 6,000 to 12,000 miles. Good balance of grip and durability.
- Touring tyres — 10,000 to 15,000+ miles. Harder compound designed for maximum mileage.
Age limit
Regardless of remaining tread, replace motorcycle tyres that are older than 5 years from the date of manufacture. Check the DOT date code on the sidewall.
Legal minimum tread
The UK legal minimum tread depth for motorcycles over 50cc is 1mm across three-quarters of the breadth and around the entire circumference.
