How far can you travel on a run flat tyre?
Distance and speed limits for run flat tyres
Standard limits
Most run flat tyres are designed to allow you to continue driving after a complete loss of pressure for:
- Up to 50 miles (approximately 80 kilometres)
- At a maximum speed of 50 mph (80 km/h)
This is generally enough to get you from most locations to a nearby garage without needing a roadside tyre change.
Important safety notes
- The exact limits vary by manufacturer, so check the tyre documentation or sidewall markings for your specific tyres
- Exceeding the distance or speed limits risks permanent damage to the wheel rim and tyre structure
- The TPMS dashboard light will alert you when pressure has dropped. Reduce your speed immediately when you see this warning.
- Avoid sharp cornering, heavy braking and motorway speeds when driving on a deflated run flat
After driving on a deflated run flat
Once you have driven on a deflated run flat, the tyre will almost certainly need replacing, even if it appears intact externally. Have it inspected at a garage as soon as possible.
