Do I need to replace all tyres with winter tyres?
Fitting winter tyres to your vehicle
For the safest and most predictable handling, all four tyres should be the same type. This applies to winter tyres just as it does to summer or all-season tyres.
Why all four matters
Mixing winter and summer tyres on the same vehicle creates a dangerous imbalance. The axle with summer tyres will have significantly less grip in cold conditions than the axle with winter tyres. This can lead to unpredictable oversteer or understeer, particularly on icy or wet roads where grip differences are most pronounced.
If you can only afford two
If budget is a constraint, fit winter tyres as a matching pair on the same axle. The rear axle is generally the safer choice for the better-gripping tyres, as rear-end instability is harder to control than front-end understeer. However, fitting all four remains the safest option and is what we always recommend.
