Can you repair or plug a run flat tyre?

Repairing run flat tyres

The general recommendation from tyre manufacturers and industry guidelines is to replace rather than repair a run flat tyre that has been driven on with low or zero pressure.

Why repair is not recommended

  • Hidden internal damage — Once a run flat has been driven on while deflated, the reinforced sidewall may have sustained structural damage that is not visible from the outside
  • Risk of failure — A repaired run flat could fail unexpectedly at speed if the internal structure has been compromised
  • Warranty implications — Most manufacturers void the tyre's warranty if a run flat is repaired after being driven flat

Limited exceptions

Some tyre fitters may consider a repair in very limited circumstances, for example if the puncture is small, located in the central tread area, and the TPMS confirms the tyre was never driven fully flat. However, the general industry recommendation remains replacement for safety reasons.
