Tyres

Can you mix speed ratings on tyres?

Mixing speed ratings

It is not recommended to mix different speed ratings on the same vehicle. All four tyres should ideally have the same speed rating for consistent and predictable handling.

If you have no choice

If you must mix speed ratings temporarily, the lower-rated tyres should go on the rear axle. Be aware that your vehicle's maximum safe speed is limited by the lowest-rated tyre fitted to the car.

Insurance implications

Mixing speed ratings, or fitting any tyre below the manufacturer's recommended rating, may affect your insurance cover. It is worth checking with your insurer if you are in any doubt about your current setup.
