Can you mix run flat tyres with normal tyres?

Mixing run flat and standard tyres

This is not recommended by any tyre manufacturer or motoring safety organisation.

Why mixing causes problems

Run flat and standard tyres have very different sidewall stiffness, weight and ride characteristics. Mixing the two types on the same vehicle creates inconsistent handling because each axle behaves differently. This is particularly dangerous during emergency manoeuvres or in slippery conditions, where predictable handling is most critical.

Specific risks

  • Uneven grip levels between front and rear axles
  • Unpredictable behaviour during cornering or emergency braking
  • Potential interference with electronic stability and traction control systems

What to do instead

Replace tyres in matching pairs on the same axle at minimum. Ideally, all four tyres should be the same type, whether that is all run flat or all standard. If you are unsure what is right for your vehicle, contact our team for advice.
