Can you fit run flat tyres to any car?
Fitting run flat tyres to your car
Run flat tyres should only be fitted to vehicles that have a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) installed and working.
Why TPMS is essential
Run flat tyres are designed to feel relatively normal even when completely deflated. Without a TPMS warning light on your dashboard, you may not realise you have a puncture. Driving unknowingly on a fully deflated run flat beyond its safe distance would risk damaging the wheel and could compromise your safety.
Does my car have TPMS?
TPMS has been a legal requirement on all new cars sold in the EU and UK since November 2014. If your car was manufactured after this date, it will have TPMS fitted. Many vehicles built before this date also have the system installed.
Other things to check
- Confirm that run flat tyres are available in the size your vehicle requires
- Be aware that vehicles not originally designed for run flats may find the stiffer ride less comfortable
- Consult your vehicle handbook or contact us for specific advice
