Tyres

Can tyres be recycled?

Tyre recycling in the UK

Yes, old tyres can and are recycled through several methods.

How tyres are recycled

  • Rubber crumb — Granulated into small particles used for sports surfaces, playgrounds, artificial pitches and safety flooring
  • Energy recovery — Used as fuel in cement kilns and power generation, where the high energy content of rubber is put to use
  • Retreading — Commercial vehicle tyres can have a new tread applied to the existing casing for continued use
  • New products — Processed rubber is used in various manufactured goods including flooring, mats and construction materials

Legal requirements

It has been illegal to send whole tyres to landfill in the UK since 2003, and shredded tyres have been banned from landfill since 2006. This means all tyres collected for disposal must be recycled or recovered. When you book fitting through Tyres.co.uk, responsible disposal and recycling is included in the price.
