Can I mix tyre tread patterns?

Mixing tyre tread patterns

The legal requirement

In the UK, both tyres on the same axle must have matching tread patterns. This means your two front tyres must be the same, and your two rear tyres must be the same. Mixing different patterns on the same axle is illegal and can compromise handling safety.

Different patterns front to rear

You can legally have different tread patterns on the front and rear axles. However, having identical tyres across all four wheels is always the ideal setup for the most consistent and predictable handling.

What else must match on the same axle

  • Same tyre size
  • Same construction type (you cannot mix radial and crossply)
  • Same tread pattern
  • Ideally the same brand, model and level of wear
