Can I change away from run flat tyres?

Switching from run flat to standard tyres

In most cases you can switch, but only if your vehicle has an alternative way to deal with a puncture.

You need one of these alternatives

  • A full-size or space-saver spare wheel
  • A tyre repair kit consisting of sealant and a compressor

If your car has no spare wheel

Many run-flat-equipped vehicles, particularly BMWs and MINIs, are supplied without any spare wheel at all. If you switch to standard tyres on these vehicles, you would be completely stranded in the event of a puncture with no way to continue your journey. In this situation, staying with run flats is strongly recommended.

Things to consider before switching

  • Insurance — Some policies may require notification if you change from the factory tyre specification
  • Ride quality — Standard tyres generally offer a softer, more comfortable ride
  • Cost — Standard tyres are typically cheaper to buy than run flat equivalents
  • Puncture preparedness — You need a clear plan for dealing with a flat tyre without run flat protection

Check your vehicle handbook and weigh up the practical trade-offs before making the switch.
