Are motorbike tyres tubeless?

Motorcycle tyre types

Whether your motorcycle uses tubeless or tubed tyres depends on the type of wheels fitted.

Tubeless motorcycle tyres

Most modern motorcycles with alloy or cast wheels use tubeless tyres. These tyres seal directly against the rim, just like car tyres. They offer the advantage of losing air slowly in the event of a puncture rather than deflating instantly.

Tubed motorcycle tyres

Motorcycles with wire-spoke wheels typically require tyres with inner tubes. This is because the spoke holes in the rim mean the wheel cannot create an airtight seal with a tubeless tyre on its own.

How to check

Check your motorcycle handbook or look at the markings on your current tyres. Tubeless tyres are usually marked TUBELESS on the sidewall. If in doubt, ask your dealer or a motorcycle tyre specialist.
