Potenza RE050A Tyres description & features

The asymmetric Bridgestone Potenza RE050A features a separate wet and dry road design. The dry-road design relies on large cornering blocks and a dry-road edge band. The inner edge dry-road design has a water-clearing groove that runs the length of the tyre and removes water to clear pathways. Silica-enhanced rubber with a strong casing and reinforced design respond to the direct and precise steering expectations made with this Potenza.

RFT models feature self-supporting sidewalls which allow the tyre to limp after losing air pressure for the 'stay slow and limp' distance specified in the vehicle owner's manual. Some OE tyres have a sidewall BMW star or Mercedes-Benz MOE marking which indicates that the tyre was made to those vehicle makers' specifications. That's great to hear. On my last 6 series convertible, I had a different kind of Bridgestone tyres and they handled well in all conditions too - especially considering they are RFTs and the comfort they offer on normal roads away from the motorway.

I would rather have different run-flat tyres than these options (noted concerns about soaking wet grip, noise, dry grip efficiency, etc) or far more expensive Pirelli options. Even with a 10% discount, £666 for four tyres is economically unreasonable, as I cannot fault the grip or noise (for run flats) and they are no different from the previous ones I had (same model), which I only changed because of age and some cracking.

They are good tyres, but they're not magic. They didn't blow my mind until my car (EP3) had a proper geometry setup. Now, grip in the dry is super good! In the winter though, they take warming up a little bit. Unlike my Turanza T005 tyres that got slippery in the heat, these stay consistent. (I have some amazing B roads near me, so I'm lucky)

I thought there might be some problem with the car since the traction control kept activating, but I've found no issues with the car itself. I now know the problem with the performance is the tyres because the loss of grip when taking corners and going roundabouts is horrible. I find these horrible tyres by Bridgestone to be the worst available for the car and feel that I've never had tyres worse than these. After Christmas I intend to swap them for new Dunlops and will never buy Bridgestone again.

Cold and slippery conditions aren't great for the grip. T005s seem to manage better under those conditions. I anticipate they will do well in the warm and dry conditions as well, but I haven't had a lot of testing for that and the indications still show that it is positive.

These tyres are much better than my old ones. They feel more balanced, don't roll over in corners, and provide a more stable ride. Handling is even better now that I have all four fitted. I just hit 4000 miles on the tyres and they are wearing nicely. Grip is great in both dry and wet conditions. Protection for the rim works really well and they look awesome on my 19 inch wheels.

I appreciate the grip the tyres have, however, they are more noisy than I anticipated. The car did 9,000 miles with the original tyres, so noise is not a huge factor. The new tyres on the front with 8mm tread are quite loud at the moment. I hope the noise will reduce as they wear down. All in all, they are very good tyres.

I think that the ride quality with these tyres and the 19-inch rims is awful. I would choose a different wheel and tyre setup because bumpy roads are not a pleasant experience. I also do a lot of town driving and they wear down quickly; my last set lasted only about 12,000 miles and I am not an aggressive driver.

I've had a lot of different tyres before, and these are the best quality and most sturdy ones I've come across. The low profile construction seems to compliment the stiffness just right as steering response is phenomenal. Bridgestone's reputation for quality is upheld with these. After 4000 miles, they are still in great condition. For the expected durability of the harder rubber, I chose the B wet grip, and it appears to be correct. In dry conditions, I have had no issues. I have experienced some wheel spin when I accelerate quickly in the wet, but overall, I am very happy with the performance of these tyres. I was happy enough to buy two more to complete the set.

Compared to the first Goodyear Excellence run-flats on my BMW 530D, the grip on these tyres is considerably better during cold winter days and wet rainy weather. The ease of the journey is approximately the same. Even though I suspect they won't last as long, I am prepared to accept that because of their better all round performance and quality. As the Goodyears do in this size, they offer less rim protection though, so beware of parking to avoid kerbing the wheels.

When I got my Ford Fiesta ST, I bought a full set of Michelin tyres which suggest using sports tyres. However, I found the Michelins to be a bit too soft for daily use, though they would probably be great for track days. In an unfortunate bit of luck, I had two tyre blowouts in just two months. The Bridgestones I replaced them with have better grip in the wet and I am happy with how they perform on the road. They have similar mileage, are cheaper, and I will be buying from Tyres.co.uk again.
