SP WinterSport 5 Tyres description & features

Dunlop's SP WinterSport 5 is a passenger car tyre designed for snow and slush adhesion at low temperatures. Its tread design is more blocky than the SP Winter Sport 4D's which increases the number of snow biting edges. Opening slits run through the blocks to grip snow and transport it to the centre of the tread where the slush is managed by deep rimmed grooves that run the length of the tread. Dunlop's lightweight design further improves efficiency by lowering rolling resistance.

The SP Winter Sport 4D is the direct predecessor of the SP Winter Sport 5 and will be replaced by the SP Winter Sport 5 in Dunlop's winter collection. The SP Winter Sport 5 also carries the 3PMSF and M+S designation on the side of the tyre. Dunlop also produces a variant for SUV fitments called the Winter Sport 5 SUV. These tyres do a great job in snowy conditions. I haven't had my 1 Series spin out on me yet. They're not great with fuel economy, but that's expected with winter tyres.

These snow and mud tyres also provide exceptional grip and traction in heavy rains and standing water, as well as in ice or slush. They are also just as quiet as summer tyres and do not cause any changes to fuel consumption.

While the tyres have a minor 'floating' sensation, they did exceptional snow performance, and drove by many other cars. In normal conditions, I did not experience a decrease in handling, braking, performance, or fuel consumption, although they might be even better in really cold conditions. The main issue is not about the tyres. Changing my old summer tyres to new [non-standard] rims has been difficult and time consuming, which is the opposite of what the advertisements say. If I had known, I probably would not have bought winter tyres.

They are great in the snow and ice and wet weather, and they are great in dry conditions too. They lose grip when it is above 7 degrees Celsius. This winter has been warm and while I haven't tested them in deep snow, they have performed well on all the snow days.

Having excellent winter tyres has been a big bonus. We live on a Welsh mountain and the road often ices up in the winter. These tyres made the car feel very stable and I was able to go to work and back up the mountain safely each day and would recommend to others.

I fitted these tyres just for winter as it is longer and colder in the North than in the South, making these conditions ideal. They're not the best to use year-round so the mileage isn't high. Performance in rain and snow is really great - I am pleased with them.

The tyres look fine considering how recent the fitting was, and with autumn weather coming in, they'll only be seeing cooler weather now. All four were put on and three exhibit some lines on the tread. Upon inspection, three were German and one was Polish, so let's hope Dunlop keeps QC across plants consistent. Disappointed to get a "mixed set" from the garage.

Not bad grip in cold weather even in the snow, however, they are not as efficient as summer tyres on long motorway journeys, which can lead to an increase of 10 mpg being used. They also feel different to summer tyres, not worse, just different.

I had these fitted to my T6 in November and so far they are doing well. They hold the road well even in poor weather and even managed to tackle the little bit of snow we have had this season (only one day so far). They do tend to be a bit noisy when driving on dry roads but that's to be expected with winter tyres. No signs of wear so far and they have definitely been worth the money.
