What should I do if my tyre bursts while driving?

What to do if a tyre bursts

A tyre blowout is frightening, but staying calm and following the correct steps will help you stop safely.

Step by step

  • Grip the steering wheel firmly with both hands. The car may pull sharply to one side.
  • Do not brake suddenly. This is the most important thing. Sudden braking can cause you to lose control.
  • Ease off the accelerator gradually and let the car slow down on its own.
  • Steer gently to a safe stopping point, such as the hard shoulder or a lay-by.
  • Turn on your hazard lights as soon as it is safe to do so.
  • Once stopped safely, do not attempt a wheel change on a motorway. Call roadside assistance and wait behind the barrier if possible.
