How to check your tyres are safe

The best way to check tyres are safe is to keep checking them regularly. Here are three checks that need to be done every month:

1. Tread depth

To check the depth of the tread, use either the 20p test, or a tread depth gauge. The legal minimum is 1.6mm however 3mm is the recommended replacement point.

2. Tyre condition

You should examine the sidewalls and the tread, and look for cracks, bulges, cuts, or anything embedded (like nails or screws). Any of these factors could compromise the integrity of the tyre.

3. Tyre pressure

Once a month, and at minimum, you should check the pressure. This should be done when the tyre is cold. The best practice is to use the measurements set by your manufacturer, which can be found either on the door frame sticker or in your handbook.
