Are part-worn tyres safe and legal?

Part-worn tyres

Legal requirements

In the UK, selling part worn tyres is legal, but with caveats. They have to be permanently marked as PART WORN. They must also be at least 2mm in tread depth, have no structural problems, and must not have any repairs to the sidewall.

The Reality

Given the severity of the findings of a multitude of studies, it is clear that a large number of part-worn tyres sold in the UK are unsafe and below legal standard. Damage to the inner lining of tyres is often not visible from the outside, and there is often no documented record of a tyre’s history, including whether a tyre was used whilst flat.

Our recommendation

New tyres are the best and safest choice. Tyres.co.uk sells fully legal new tyres and offers full manufacturer warranty protection.
