What are the main tyre reasons my car could fail its MOT?

Tyre-related MOT failures

Tyres are one of the most common reasons for an MOT failure. Here are the main tyre issues that can cause a fail:

  • Tread depth below 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread
  • Cuts, bulges or lumps on the sidewall or tread that expose the internal structure
  • Different construction types on the same axle, such as mixing radial and crossply
  • Incorrectly sized tyres for the vehicle
  • Excessive or uneven wear that compromises the tyre's safety
  • Damaged or insecure valves

Pre-MOT tip

Check your tyres before your MOT appointment. If any need replacing, order through Tyres.co.uk and book fitting ahead of the test date to avoid a failure and retest fee.
