What should I do if my tyre bursts while driving?

What to do if a tyre bursts

A tyre blowout is frightening, but staying calm and following the correct steps will help you stop safely.

Step by step

  1. Grip the steering wheel firmly with both hands. The car may pull sharply to one side.
  2. Do not brake suddenly. This is the most important thing. Sudden braking can cause you to lose control.
  3. Ease off the accelerator gradually and let the car slow down on its own.
  4. Steer gently to a safe stopping point, such as the hard shoulder or a lay-by.
  5. Turn on your hazard lights as soon as it is safe to do so.
  6. Once stopped safely, do not attempt a wheel change on a motorway. Call roadside assistance and wait behind the barrier if possible.
