What are the common causes of a tyre blowout?

Common causes of tyre blowouts

  • Underinflation — The most common cause. Low pressure creates excessive sidewall flex, building up heat that can lead to sudden failure.
  • Overloading — Exceeding the tyre's load rating puts too much stress on the structure.
  • Impact damage — Hitting potholes, kerbs or road debris at speed can damage the tyre's internal structure, sometimes without visible external signs.
  • Age and degradation — Old, brittle rubber is more prone to sudden failure. Replace tyres after 5 to 6 years.
  • Existing damage — Unrepaired cuts, bulges or punctures weaken the tyre and increase failure risk.

Prevention

Regular pressure checks, visual inspections and replacing worn or aged tyres are the best ways to prevent blowouts.
