Can a tyre be repaired?

Tyre repair guidelines

Many punctures can be safely repaired, but there are strict rules about what is and is not repairable.

A tyre can be repaired if

  • The puncture is in the central tread area (central three-quarters of the tread width)
  • The hole is no larger than 6mm in diameter
  • The tyre has not been driven on while flat
  • There is no secondary sidewall or structural damage

A tyre must be replaced if

  • The damage is on or near the sidewall
  • The tyre has been driven on while completely flat
  • There is structural damage visible inside the tyre
  • The hole is larger than 6mm

The repair must be a combination plug-and-patch applied from inside the tyre by a professional. External-only plugs are not considered a permanent safe repair.
