Check the tyre sidewall for the size format (for example 205/55 R16), or look at the vehicle placard inside the driver door area and your handbook. If you are unsure, use the registration search to see the factory fitments for your Beetle.
Registration lookup uses vehicle data to suggest suitable sizes, but it is still worth confirming the size currently fitted, especially if your Beetle has different wheels than standard or has been modified.
In the UK, car tyres must have at least 1.6 mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around the full circumference. Many drivers replace earlier, around 3 mm, for improved wet grip.
Only choose XL or reinforced tyres if the recommended load index for your Beetle requires it. Match the load index and speed rating shown on the placard or handbook, as fitting the wrong rating can affect safety and legality.
After selecting tyres, you choose a nearby fitting centre and an appointment time. The tyres are delivered to that garage, where they are fitted and balanced; old tyres are usually disposed of as part of the fitting service.
